Commission insists that we must comply with Water Directive under new system – Hayes
Brian Hayes MEP today (Monday) said that the European Commission has insisted that Irish authorities must be fully compliant with the Water Framework Directive, in its first public comment on the final report of the Expert Water Commission.
“The Commission has made it quite clear, through a response to a Parliamentary question, that Ireland has to be fully compliant with the Water Framework Directive following the work of the Oireachtas Water Committee.
“However, we are still in the dark whether the recommendations from the Expert Water Group comply with the Water Framework Directive. The Oireachtas Committee needs clear legal advice from the Commission about what system does or does not comply with the Directive. Otherwise, the Committee could waste a lot of time trying to decipher the whether a new system stands up under EU law.
“The Commission needs to stop treading on eggshells in the water charges debate. They have a responsibility to give clarity to lawmakers who ultimately have to put in place a new water funding system that complies with European law.”
