Dublin Local Authorities need to up their game – Hayes

Dublin MEP Brian Hayes has today said that Dublin Local Authorities need to up their game when it comes to providing housing across the Capital.

“The crisis in social housing in Dublin continues to rumble on. There are now almost 45,000 people on the housing waiting lists in the Dublin area. That is an increase of more than 12,000 in the last 2 years. Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has seen the biggest increase – 60% during that period.”

“There needs to be a much more urgent response to the housing crisis by the four Dublin local authorities. In Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for example, they have a waiting list of 5,500; yet they are planning to build just twelve social housing units in 2015. This is a totally inadequate response to the scale of the demand for social housing.”

“An effective response to the Dublin housing crisis will involve a close partnership between local authorities, national government, national agencies and voluntary organisations. The Government have put the funds in place to support this. An additional €312 million was also announced last week in the Capital Plan for this very issue”

“The housing crisis in Dublin is real and the level of social housing output must be quickly ramped up. The four local authorities in the Dublin region must up their game” concluded MEP Hayes.
